N CLARK ATHENS NY STONEWARE JAR W/INCISED BIRDS

Bulbous stoneware jar decorated on both sides with rare incised birds on a branch with leaf. Stamped (N Clark Athens). Most likely made ca. 1825 is the early years of Nathan Clarks pottery in Athens, NY. Features a tooled shoulder, flared square rim, and ribbed cobalt handles. Brushed cobalt wreath encircling cobalt washed (N Clark Athens) stamp. Cobalt on handle terminals, the bird decoration is deeply incised with detailed eyes, feathers, and leaves. Rear bird decoration was altered by the potter, with the original birds legs filled in and re-incised in an alternate position. 15.5” high, 6.5” wide at top, 7” wide at bottom. / Condition: Small, .5" chip on base, possibly done in the making, an old interior rim chip, and a .25" interior line. Exterior glaze imperfections, and interior lime staining.
